Stagecoach RobberyOn Friday, September 3rd, 1880, the John E. Bell, carrying seven passengers, was stopped near Little Hope Church by 2 masked brigands. The brigands ordered all the passengers onto the road, except for Judge R.H. Rountree and his daughter Lizzie. The group's valuables were all taken away. Judge Rountree lost a gold watch and Lizzie lost her diamond rings.
The brigands wished the group "better luck next time" and escaped into the woods. A few months later, Jesse James, a robber, was murdered, and on his wrist was Judge Rountree's gold watch. |
